Today was Day 1 of the Senior Bowl practices here are some thoughts from the North’s Practice:
- The North’s Offensive line is pretty bad, there isn’t one guy on that line who appears to be a high first round pick. In the individual drills the defensive guys were much better than the guys on the o-line…
- On that note these guys really stood out on the defensive side of the line, Mitch King was the guy who stood out the most in the individual drills. That’s going to be a little bit deceiving because Mitch is an undersized guy who used his quickness to just blow by the slow, and clearly a step behind skill wise, offensive line guys. Another 2 tackles who stood out were the Boston College pair of B.J. Raji and Ron Brace. These 2 were just bulls out there, and they could power through just about any guy who was out there to block them. Ziggy Hood and Larry English both showed flashes, but not the consistency of the previously mentioned guys.
- As far as skill guys go, it was hard to judge these guys out there the first day but at quarterback Rhett Bomar was head and shoulders above the other guys there. Probably the difference between being drafted in the first 3 rounds (Bomar) and not (Harrell – Nathan Brown). A bit surprising at running back was Kory Sheets, he’s quick and seems to have all the tools you can ask for out of a back. It’s hard to say a receiver stood out, but if I had to pick one that surprised me it would be Brooks Foster out of UNC. He seems to have great top line speed and very good hands, but my pick for the best receiver on the field is Derrick Williams. He just appeared to have plus hands and blazing speed. Again it was hard to judge on the first day.
- There were not any backers/DBs that stood out, but then again the drills were really geared towards the guys on O today, so there will probably be more who stand out tomorrow when the put on full pads.
Check back tomorrow for Day 2 updates on the North and South squads!
